The Ten Types of Propaganda |
Bandwagon
This image is a clear indicator of the bandwagon used to promote Barack Obama. He is shown to be supported by the US soldiers, presenting the image that Obama is supported by the mass. This example of propaganda involves a well-known technique called a bandwagon. Bandwagon, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary; is a popular activity, effort, or cause that attracts growing support. By situating Barack Obama in front of the supportive and positive soldiers holding posters of him, convince the audience that this is how Obama is portrayed by the majority. Therefore, due to the fact that people have urges to be a part of a group, as it makes them feel safer, they take a step forward, beginning to think like the majority. As in this case, the witnessing targets would gain positive emotions towards Obama because the mass, the positive, smiling, and nice soldiers are supporting Obama. Bandwagon is one of the most commonly used propaganda techniques in all of human history and although it is not rather harmful in this image, it is also one of the most abused types of propaganda used.
