The Ten Types of Propaganda |
Glittering generalities
Glittering generality is a emotionally appealing phrase so closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that it carries conviction without supporting information or reason. Such highly valued concepts attract general approval and acclaim. In this image, Obama is standing in front of a couple of campaign posters stating the following: "change we can believe in." What does this make you think about? Well, as for some of us, it makes us think that we can confide in the smiling person standing in front of such wise words. Although the statement cannot be proved, it seems so advanced and trusting that we unconsciously confide in the words. Glittering generalities is a type of propaganda that is comparably more difficult to create but at the same time, is very effective. This technique assists in creating a whole new generality, and helps the audience portray the subject in new way, with a new concept.
